Hello 2019,

After wiping out on my 2018 writing resolutions I decided to refer to my plans not as resolutions but as creative goals.

Do you have a word for 2019?

My word for 2019 is intentional.

I plan to be purposeful and deliberate when it comes to my writing. Time and space are a writer’s most precious resource, and this year my focus is not only on finding more time to write, but also protecting the limited writing time I have.

So let’s get on with the goals:

Goal 1

Finish second and third drafts of Code Green Society (middle grade adventure novel). Get beta reader feedback and whip the manuscript into query shape.

Goal 2

Create database of agents to query. I plan to send out queries in batches so a spreadsheet is a must for some semblance of organization. Meanwhile I’ll polish my query letter, get feedback and then QUERY!!!! Maybe I’ll even land a agent. Yes, I’m speaking this into existence.

Goal 3

Start new middle grade novel inspired by a mythical Caribbean creature. So far I have a rough outline, tons of notes and more than enough excitement. Looking forward to starting something new but I’ve got to admit, it’s also intimidating….

Goal 4

Outline a new middle grade contemporary story, currently known as the hurricane story. I spent most of 2018 making notes and researching but writing an outline will really pull the story together for me. Can’t say I’ll start drafting in 2019 but I’ll be happy to get the outline squared away.

Goal 5

Attend a writing conference and enter writing competitions. Specifically, the Frank Collymore Literary Endowment and NIFCA in Barbados.

Goal 6

Explore and experiment with alternative writing forms like poetry and flash fiction.

Goal 7

I don’t have reading goals per se. Reading is an escape and I have no plans to put quotas on myself. However I want to read more writing craft books and books about the creative process.

Goal 8

Create an editorial calendar for the blog and post twice a month (first and third Mondays).

So that’s it for me. Eight goals. I need more notebooks. Do you have writing goals for 2019? Wishing you all the best for 2019. May it be our best year yet!!

  1. My goal for 2019 is to just start writing and do it consistently. I’m not sure if I’ll work my way from not writing much to writing a full novel in a year, but I figure blogging, freelance writing, and dabbling in creative writing together can do nothing but good for my abilities, right?
